Work Experience Requirements for an Application for a Federal Skilled Workers Permit for Immigration to Canada

The work experience requirements for a federal skilled workers permit for immigration to Canada are one of 6 criteria that the prospective immigrant is judged against.

The work experience requirements for the federal skilled workers permit can make up a maximum of 21 points towards the 67 required points in order to successfully immigrate to Canada.

For your work experience to be considered, it must have been:

  • continuous, full-time and paid (37.5 hours per week or the equivalent in part-time), AND
  • Skill Type 0, A or B on the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC) list, AND
  • during the last 10 years.

The work experience requirement is perhaps the most important part of the federal skilled workers permit application, as under a federal skilled workers permit, except in limited situations, zero points under the work experience factor will mean an automatic refusal.

Whilst federal skilled workers applicants can score up to  21 points under the work experience factor based upon the number of years (maximum: four years) of experience, the years of experience only count if they have happened within the eligible occupations as listed by the National Occupation Classification (NOC) and classified as Skill Type 0 or Skill Level A or B.

Points awarded under the work experience category of the federal skilled workers permit are as follows:

Experience Points
Four years or more 21 points
Three years 19 points
Two years 17 points
One year 15 points
