Temporary Work Permit for Canada

Temporary work permits are required for most temporary jobs in Canada. Some 90,000 applicants obtained temporary workers permits last year to enable them to reside and work on a temporary basis in Canada.

The issuance of temporary work permits allows Canadian employers to bridge temporary skill shortages and for residents to employ live in caregivers.

While obtaining a temporary work permit can also facilitate permanent residency  through the provincial nomination schemes and the Canadian Experience Class, it is not for immigration. Those seeking immigration should click here.

  • A labour market opinion from Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) may be required. A labour market opinion confirms that the employer can fill the job with a foreign worker.
  • You must meet the general requirements for entering the country and remaining in Canada, in addition to those for getting a work permit. This means you may also need a temporary resident visa.
  • If you want your spouse or common-law partner and your dependent children to come with you to Canada, they must also apply.

Applying for a Temporary Work Permit

Application for a Canadian temporary Work Permit can be made in three ways.
  1. From inside Canada
  2. From outside Canada
  3. On arrival in Canada
